Episode 38: Tomahawk ”Self-Titled”
We're always happy to take listener requests, so why not do another one this week? This week, we've been asked to listen to Tomahawks' 2001 debut self-titled album!
Tomahawk is an experimental rock band that is considered to be a supergroup. They technically formed in 1999 in Nashville at a Mr. Bungle concert when frontman Mike Patton met guitarist Duane Denison of The Jesus Lizard. The pair would swap demos that would eventually lead to a collaboration. Prior to the band's 2001 debut, they added on members John Stanier of Helmet, and Kevin Rutmanis of Melvins. Their debut self-titled album was released in October 2001 under Ipecac Recordings and produced by Joe Funderburk. The album didn't garner too much attention other than peaking at number 20 on the US Independent Albums chart, and a couple of positive reviews from AllMusic and The Boston Harold. No true single was released from the album, but the songs "God Hates a Coward" and "POP 1" are often viewed as such amongst fans.
